Apart from concerns about the distribution of Senate committees, the group of senators opposing Akpabio is also suspicious of his ability to counter what they refer to as the “Yorubanisation” of the country’s financial system and economy.

Furthermore, allegations suggest that the move to remove Akpabio is linked to his refusal to engage with certain interest groups on matters related to oil subsidy removal and electricity tariff.

The impeachment effort against Akpabio is reportedly led by two senators from the North West who believe that he acts as a rubber stamp for the presidency and may be ineffective in carrying out his duties.

In response, the Senate, represented by its Chairman of the Media and Publicity Committee, Yemi Adaramodu, dismissed the impeachment threat, asserting the unity of the upper chamber as a “united and fraternal family.

However, Senator Ishaku Abbo, representing Adamawa North, accused Akpabio and his associates of fueling the impeachment narrative to create divisions between President Bola Tinubu and northern politicians.

Abbo also raised concerns about Akpabio’s distribution of Grade A committees mainly to his supporters during the Senate leadership contest.
