Chairman of the Iwere Forum, Chief Omolubi Newuwumi, has called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to reconsider its strategies to avoid escalating tensions in the Niger Delta region.

Newuwumi, a prominent figure in the Warri Kingdom, expressed concern over NNPCL’s approach to awarding pipeline surveillance contracts, suggesting that it appears to prioritize certain individuals’ interests over maintaining peace.

In a statement released to Vanguard, Newuwumi criticized the perceived targeting of surveillance firms with Itsekiri affiliations, emphasizing the importance of fairness and adherence to agreements between ethnic groups in the Delta region.

He urged NNPCL officials to explore alternative ways of accommodating various interests without disadvantaging any particular group, emphasizing the need to prioritize boosting oil production over actions that could potentially disrupt harmony among ethnic communities in the Warri area.
