Niger State government has commenced a rigorous crackdown on illicit mining sites as part of its commitment to shielding communities from the adverse consequences of such activities.
Alhaji Garba Sabo Yahaya, the Commissioner for Mineral Resources, underscored that the crackdown was prompted by numerous grievances from communities regarding the detrimental effects of unauthorized mining on their well-being and sources of income.
The enforcement action targeted several well-known mining locations, including those situated in Mai Wayo, Kateregi, and Gadaeregi along the Minna-Bida Road.
Communities in these areas have highlighted significant environmental hazards and health hazards linked to the mining operations.
State government officials emphasized the imperative of promoting responsible mining practices to safeguard both the environment and the populace’s health.
Mr. Adeife Oluwatosin, Project Manager of Ries Templar Integrated Services operating at one of the sites, expressed readiness to halt operations and collaborate with the authorities. He assured compliance with regulations and vowed to enhance their practices for the betterment of the state and its inhabitants.
