According to the State Commissioner for Planning, Mustapha Ndajiwo, the proposed budget is divided into ₦188.42 billion for recurrent expenditure (15.68%) and ₦1.01 trillion for capital expenditure (84.34%). Ndajiwo also highlighted that the 2025 budget is 32.94% higher than the approved budget for 2024, reflecting a significant increase in the state’s financial allocation for developmental projects.
Meanwhile, in Lagos State, the State House of Assembly is currently reviewing the 2025 appropriation bill, which Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had presented last Thursday, amounting to ₦3.005 trillion. The bill has been referred to the joint committees on Appropriation and Finance, with a mandate to report back in a month. During the plenary, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa oversaw the discussions, while Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh, Chairman of the House Committee on Budget and Economic Planning, provided a breakdown of the proposed budget.
Olumoh raised concerns about the projected ₦408 billion deficit financing in the Lagos budget, urging caution in the use of loans and advocating for alternative funding methods, such as Public-Private Partnerships. He emphasized the need for a realistic budget and a sustainable approach to financing, to avoid over-reliance on loans. Despite these concerns, he praised the government for the intentions reflected in the budget proposal, stressing the importance of thorough scrutiny to ensure fiscal responsibility and prevent waste.
