The impressive performance of the Nigerian team in the recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone played a significant role in their rise in the rankings. Under the guidance of coach Jose Peseiro, the Eagles secured a 3-1 victory against the Leone Stars in a match held in Liberia.
This victory not only showcased the team’s strength but also secured their qualification for the AFCON tournament scheduled to take place in Ivory Coast next year.
In the previous FIFA rankings released in April, Nigeria occupied the 40th position. Their current position within the top six African nations is advantageous as it ensures they will be among the top-seeded teams during the AFCON draw scheduled later in 2023.
Meanwhile, Morocco continues to hold the top position among African nations, sitting at 13th place in the global rankings. Senegal follows closely behind in 18th place, while Tunisia (31), Algeria (33), and (34) also rank among the top teams on the continent.
At the global level, Argentina maintains its position as the number one ranked nation, with France, Brazil, England, and Belgium rounding out the top five.
