Nigeria Faces World’s Second Worst Food Insecurity Crisis, Warns Bill Gates

Bill Gates, Co-Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has revealed that Nigeria is facing the second highest rate of food insecurity globally.

In an interview with Lara Adejoro, Gates attributed the crisis to climate change, which has led to the loss of arable land and driven up food prices. He stated, “Nigeria currently holds the second highest position in food insecurity worldwide, with climate change significantly worsening the situation.”

Gates explained that the disappearance of fertile land, combined with pest infestations, has devastated harvests and led to soaring prices for essential foods. “Climate-related damage on African farms is more than double the global average. The poorest farmers are disproportionately affected, grappling with increasing droughts, pests, and diseases, which only intensify food shortages and inflate prices,” he added.

Looking ahead, Gates warned that by 2050, climate change could result in nearly 40 million additional children suffering from stunting, on top of the 400 million already facing nutritional deficiencies.

Gates also noted that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is collaborating with the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation to address the climate-induced hunger crisis. “The positive news is that innovation is advancing rapidly in tandem with climate change. We envision a transformative agricultural sector led by smallholder farmers equipped with the knowledge, tools, and technology to enhance their livelihoods,” he said.
