ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, emphasized the strict prohibition of same-sex marriage in Nigeria under the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014. Adejobi outlined the legal aspects related to unnatural offences and same-sex marriage, referencing the Nigerian Criminal Code Act applicable in Southern states and Section 284 of the Nigerian Penal Code applicable in the Northern part of the country.

According to Adejobi, the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014 criminalizes the solemnization, operation, and public display of same-sex marriages. He pointed out that recent social media activities, where individuals identifying as queer were seen endorsing and associating with activities deemed unnatural under Nigerian laws, prompted the Police Force to clarify the legal stance on such matters.

Under the Nigerian Criminal Code Act in Southern states, Sections 214 to 217 explicitly criminalize unnatural offences, including acts such as engaging in carnal knowledge against the order of nature with a person or an animal. Those found guilty may face legal consequences as prescribed by the law.

Similarly, Section 284 of the Nigerian Penal Code, applicable in the Northern part of the country, reinforces the prohibition of same-sex marriage. The Police Force emphasized the need for the public to be aware of these legal provisions and warned that individuals engaging in such activities would face the consequences dictated by the law.
