Nigerian Army Takes Action: Banex Plaza Closed For Investigation

The Nigerian Army has announced the temporary closure of Banex Plaza, situated in the Wuse 2 area of Abuja, in response to an altercation that occurred involving two soldiers at the complex.

Reports indicate that the plaza experienced turmoil last Saturday, May 18, when a confrontation arose between some traders and two soldiers. Witnesses recounted that the soldiers had visited the plaza to address an issue regarding a phone, which escalated into a dispute with the traders, leading to physical altercations. Following the incident, numerous shop owners and traders promptly closed their businesses for the day to avoid potential retaliatory actions.

On Monday, military personnel arrived at the plaza in approximately five Hilux vehicles and enforced its closure.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, May 21, Onyema Nwachukwu, the army spokesperson, clarified that the assaulted soldiers were unarmed and had not exhibited any form of aggression. He affirmed that a meeting had been arranged with the plaza’s management to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

The statement emphasized the Army’s commitment to ensuring the safety of the Federal Capital Territory and preventing security threats posed by individuals using the Banex vicinity as a haven. It underscored the importance of investigating the circumstances surrounding the soldiers’ presence at the plaza and the ensuing altercation.

Furthermore, the statement condemned acts of violence against personnel, highlighting their potential to escalate into broader security concerns. The Nigerian Army pledged thorough investigations into the incident to uphold law and order and safeguard national security.
