The Nigerian Army has confirmed the rise of a new terrorist group called ‘Lukarawas’ in northwest Nigeria.
This announcement was made by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, during a briefing on November 8 in Abuja, where he outlined the recent developments in military operations.
According to Buba, the ‘Lukarawas’ group emerged from Niger following the recent coup, which disrupted military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger. After the coup, the group began moving through northern Sokoto and Kebbi States, entering from the Niger and Mali regions. Buba explained that the terrorists took advantage of reduced cross-border security cooperation and used challenging terrain to infiltrate remote areas in the northwest, aiming to spread their ideology.
Initially, locals accepted the presence of this group, mistakenly believing they had good intentions. As a result, they did not report the movement of these terrorists to security agencies. Buba assured that military forces are actively locating and neutralizing the threat posed by this group.
