Ndume, a former Senate Majority Leader, questioned the necessity of establishing a new body dedicated to conducting elections every four years, suggesting that the current Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is underutilized and capable of handling these duties.

He expressed his frustration with the complexities of Nigeria’s electoral system, asserting that it is structured to promote manipulation. “I support local government autonomy and the idea of INEC overseeing local government elections. One of the topics currently being discussed in the National Assembly is the establishment of a National Local Government Electoral Commission, which I oppose,” he stated.

Ndume further remarked, “Elections in Nigeria are deliberately complicated to allow for manipulation. Why don’t we enact laws that guarantee every vote counts? Why not enable citizens to elect representatives directly from their phones? We should allow INEC to utilize technology to monitor elections and establish a situation room. If Google can provide real-time location information, why can’t we use technology in our electoral processes?”

He concluded by highlighting that the core issue within Nigeria’s electoral system lies in the lack of sincerity, honesty, and a sense of accountability among political leaders.
