Following the National Labour Congress (NLC) protest against the increase in electricity tariff, the federal government has revealed its forthcoming actions. Naija News noted that on Monday, organized labor disrupted operations in the power sector, demanding a rollback of the tariff.
The protest saw the NLC picketing the offices of all eleven Electricity Distribution Companies and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). In Abuja, NLC President Joe Ajaero led the protest to the Ministry of Power and the NERC headquarters, with workers shutting down offices of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company.
Similar actions occurred in Kwara, Lagos, Kaduna, Plateau, Enugu, Sokoto, and other regions where the offices of the eleven distribution companies were targeted.
In response to the protest, the Nigerian government expressed readiness for dialogue with organized labor. Florence Eke, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Power, informed Daily Post that the Federal Government, represented by Permanent Secretary Mamman Mahmuda, had scheduled a consultative meeting for the following week with labor unions and stakeholders to address the issue.
Eke emphasized that the Ministry’s role is to formulate policy, while agencies like the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission implement it. The Ministry intends to convene all stakeholders for comprehensive discussions in the upcoming meeting.
The protest and the government’s subsequent response highlight the ongoing dialogue between labor unions and the government regarding the electricity tariff hike issue.
