Nigerian Lawmakers Embark On Fresh Recess After 68-Day Vacation

Members of Nigeria’s National Assembly have proceeded on another recess shortly after returning from a 68-day annual break that began on July 23, 2026.

The lawmakers resumed plenary on Tuesday, September 29, after their initial resumption date of September 15 was postponed to allow repairs to sound systems in the chambers of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the lawmakers did not remain in plenary for long after returning before both chambers announced another adjournment, with October 13 fixed as the next date for the continuation of legislative activities.

The Senate’s decision to adjourn followed discussions on the country’s security situation ahead of a planned National Security Summit. The summit is expected to bring together lawmakers, security chiefs, security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to deliberate on Nigeria’s security challenges.

Issues expected to feature at the summit include intelligence gathering and measures to safeguard the country’s territorial integrity.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives also proceeded on the fresh break after considering fiscal matters during Tuesday’s sitting.

The House is expected to resume plenary on October 13 to continue deliberations on pending bills, budget-related issues and other matters before the chamber.

The National Assembly had initially embarked on its 2026 annual recess on July 23 after concluding its legislative activities ahead of the break.

The extended recess was followed by the postponement of the lawmakers’ scheduled September 15 resumption date, with the adjustment attributed to ongoing repairs to the audio systems in the legislative chambers.

Both chambers have now fixed October 13 for the resumption of regular plenary proceedings.
