Mike Etaba, Chairman of the Committee on Public Petitions, made this assurance during a Strategy and Capacity Building retreat in Abuja.
The retreat was organized by the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) with the support of the European Union Support for Democratic Governance in Nigeria Programme Phase II.
Etaba praised PLAC for this initiative and emphasized the committee’s dedication to assisting Nigerians in addressing their concerns through the House of Representatives public petitions.
“If you encounter any issues and require assistance, simply submit a petition to the House through your representative or our offices. We will present it to the House, eliminating the need for you to fund your petition.”
Etaba highlighted that the House Committee on Public Petitions is fully funded by the House of Representatives and assured that Speaker’s Office was diligently working to ensure justice for Nigerians.
He emphasized the committee’s role as the last resort for the common man, providing legal assistance without cost, pro bono lawyers, and ensuring fair and bias-free dispute resolution.
Etaba mentioned that Nigerians should not feel intimidated and go through lengthy court proceedings, as the House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions is a more accessible avenue for resolving matters amicably.
He explained that committee members have taken on quasi-judicial roles to conduct investigations and dispute resolutions.
The slow pace of justice administration, coupled with economic hardships, corruption, unemployment, and perceived injustices, has driven Nigerians to seek self-help solutions.
The committee, along with the Public Complaints Commission, was created to address these issues and provide efficient solutions to public concerns.
Etaba concluded that the retreat would further equip committee members with strategies to enhance their performance as parliamentarians, ensuring good governance and addressing the needs of the common man.
