Nigerian Parliament Summons Dangote, BUA, And Industry Leaders Over Cement Price Surge

The committee reiterated the importance of the public hearing and emphasized the need to dispel the perception propagated by certain companies involved in the investigation that parliamentary committees lacked the authority to summon private entities.

He further stated, “There is no court order presented restraining the committee from exercising its functions under section 88(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution as Amended.

“Parliamentary committees have consistently organized public hearings to gather evidence from the public to inform decision-making on matters directly affecting citizens like this one.

“However, a private entity recognized by law does not entirely prevent the Committee from investigating its affairs, especially when the entity’s objectives heavily rely on public resources.

“Additionally, let me emphasize the objectives outlined in the Legislative Powers and Privileges Act sections 4, 5, 6, and 7 regarding the Committee’s authority to invite, investigate, and summon individuals for the purpose of gathering evidence on any matter, whether public or private, particularly when it impacts citizens and their representatives.”

In his remarks, Chairman of the House Committee on Commerce, Ahmed Munir, emphasized that the absence of any invited entity from the joint committee would support claims that the cement price hike was a deliberate attempt to burden Nigerians and impede the government’s efforts to address the nation’s housing shortage.
