Nigerians Advised Against Seeking Better Opportunities In Countries With Greater Struggles, Says Dabiri-Erewa

The Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has issued a caution to Nigerians regarding migration to countries that may be worse than Nigeria. In the video, the women, predominantly Nigerians, were pleading for the federal government’s assistance in securing their release from the Malian authorities. Dabiri-Erewa called on bloggers and influencers to support government efforts in raising awareness about the risks of migrating to less favorable nations.

“Please, we appeal to bloggers and influencers to help us reach out to Nigerians. The places you might be fleeing to could be worse than Nigeria,” she stated.

Providing further context about the viral video on her X account, Dabiri-Erewa expressed regret that some of the women featured had previously been rescued from Mali by the government but had returned to the country. “I want to address the viral video showing some girls in a Mali prison asking to come home. Not long ago, the Chief of Defence Staff assisted us in bringing back some girls.”

She noted that some of the individuals in the video are among those who had been repatriated earlier, which she found shocking. “We must respect the laws of other countries. Engaging in crime and irregular migration is extremely perilous. While the mission in Mali is working to see if they can facilitate returns, we must be vigilant,” Dabiri-Erewa added.
