Maryam Abacha, the widow of former military ruler General Sani Abacha, has lashed out at Nigerians for believing reports that successive governments have recovered large sums of money allegedly stashed abroad by her late husband.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a recent interview with TVC, Mrs. Abacha questioned the authenticity of the reported recoveries, claiming there’s no credible proof that her husband looted public funds. Her remarks follow years of announcements by the Nigerian government about repatriated Abacha-linked funds, which, by 2020, totaled over $3.6 billion. In 2022 alone, the UK and US returned a combined $43 million, while France sent back $150 million in 2023.

Rejecting the narrative, Maryam Abacha stated:

“Who has seen any actual evidence or signatures showing that he hid money abroad? Nigerians believe these stories without proof. My husband saved money for the country, but it was looted after his death—and nobody talks about that.”

She went further to criticise the media and the public, saying:

“Nigerians keep blaming Abacha after nearly three decades. Why? Is it tribalism? Is it religious bias? This negativity must stop. My husband must have been very powerful and loved—since you’re still talking about him after 27 years.”

She added:

“Nigerians are fools for believing everything they hear. Stop lying and pointing fingers. No single man—Abacha, Babangida, Abiola—makes Nigeria. Every Nigerian matters, even the man on the street.”

Maryam also urged the press to focus on nation-building rather than what she described as vilification, emphasizing the need for unity and truth.
