Tinubu stated, “I am not oblivious to the expressed and sometimes unexpressed frustrations of my fellow citizens.” He highlighted the necessity of difficult decisions taken in the past seven months, including the removal of the long-standing fuel subsidy and addressing the influence of a few on the foreign exchange system.
The President acknowledged that these decisions had caused discomfort to individuals, families, and businesses. He recognized the ongoing debates about the rising cost of living, high inflation exceeding 28%, and the high under-employment rate.
Despite the challenges, Tinubu urged Nigerians to be patient, emphasizing that his government is actively working on resolving socio-economic issues through the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’ He encouraged citizens to stay resilient during tough times, assuring them that the current difficulties are temporary.
Tinubu also addressed the issue of insecurity, mentioning ongoing efforts to free captives from abductors. While acknowledging that all security problems have not been solved, he expressed the government’s commitment to ensuring peace in homes, workplaces, and on the roads.
In conclusion, Tinubu urged Nigerians to commit to being better citizens in the new year, emphasizing the government’s determination to accelerate service delivery across various sectors after laying the groundwork for economic recovery in the previous seven months of 2023.
