The bizarre incident occurred on Friday morning, September 27, 2024, during the market day in Mayo-Belwa. Eyewitnesses reported that the man scaled the towering 33kv power line along the Yola-Jalingo highway, dramatically refusing to descend until his demand for President Tinubu’s resignation was met.

In response, local authorities and residents collaborated to negotiate with the man, with their efforts finally bearing fruit on Saturday night when he agreed to climb down.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Adamawa State Police Command, SP Suleiman Nguruje, told The Punch that the man is now in protective custody at the Criminal Investigation Department.

“The command will be parading the individual today (Monday) for attempting suicide,” Nguruje stated. “Attempting to commit suicide is a criminal offense under our constitution, and we will ensure he faces the full weight of the law.”

SP Nguruje also emphasized the police’s duty to safeguard lives and property, saying, “When someone attempts to take their own life, it becomes a matter of public concern, and the law must take its course.”

The young man is expected to be charged in court soon.
