Nigerians React With Outrage To Obaseki’s EdoBEST Scandal A shocking revelation has rocked Edo State, as Nigerians express outrage over the alleged scam behind the EdoBEST initiative. Launched in 2018 by Governor Godwin Obaseki under the PDP government, the program was initially praised as a revolutionary reform aimed at transforming basic education in the state. The EdoBEST initiative promised to accelerate learning, enabling pupils to achieve in a single term what previously took a whole year. The state’s dilapidated public schools, suffering from a lack of teachers and resources, were expected to benefit significantly from this program. Reports even suggested that Edo state pupils were outperforming their peers in mathematics and literacy by 2% and 5%, respectively.
However, recent revelations have uncovered a disturbing reality. The Edo state Ministry of Education has been distributing question papers for all subjects to public school teachers ahead of the Basic Education Certificate examination. This pre-exam coaching has allowed teachers to prep students with the answers, ensuring high pass rates and presenting a false image of success.
Prominent educator Dr. Emeka Innocent Chukwu expressed his dismay, stating, “This is a betrayal of trust. The government has manipulated educational outcomes to appear successful, but in reality, they have failed our children.”
Parents are equally outraged. Mrs. Funke Ajao Adeyemi, a parent of two pupils in Edo State, commented, “We believed in the EdoBEST program. To find out it’s all been a lie is heartbreaking. Our children deserve better.”
The scandal has raised serious questions about the integrity of the EdoBEST initiative and the credibility of the government’s claims. Photographs of the question papers for the ongoing June 2024 examinations, already printed and distributed to teachers, have further fueled the public’s anger.
“This is not just about exams; it’s about the future of our children,” said Mr. Idemudia Osarentin , a concerned citizen. “Governor Obaseki has betrayed the trust of the people. This scandal financed with Edo tax monies will have a long-lasting negative impact on education in our state.”
As the truth about EdoBEST continues to unfold, calls for transparency and accountability from the government are growing louder. The scandal not only undermines the credibility of educational reforms but also casts a shadow over the future of Edo State’s educational system.
