Nigeria’s New Initiative: Local Production Of Passports Set To Commence

The Nigerian Government has announced its strategic move towards initiating the local production of international passports within the country. This groundbreaking decision was communicated by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through an official post shared on Wednesday evening.

Tunji-Ojo disclosed that he had a constructive meeting with a local technology firm that presented a comprehensive proposal aimed at localizing the production of international passports.

Highlighting the current challenges faced with passport acquisition due to external production, Tunji-Ojo emphasized the necessity for domestic production to alleviate delays in the process.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) recently introduced a fully automated passport application system on March 8, 2024. This system is poised to provide applicants, including Nigerians residing abroad, with a seamless experience in obtaining new passports and renewing expired ones.

In addition to this milestone, Tunji-Ojo spearheaded a brainstorming session involving technical partners of the Ministry of Interior, high-ranking immigration officials, and ministry personnel. The primary objective of this initiative is to revolutionize the visa application process, especially for short-stay visitors, thereby streamlining procedures, reducing stress, and enhancing accessibility through automation.

Expressing optimism about the impact of these measures on Nigeria’s tourism sector, Tunji-Ojo underscored the importance of creating a more welcoming environment for tourists keen on exploring the nation’s vibrant culture and rich artistic heritage. He emphasized that these efforts align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
