At least nine individuals have succumbed to Lassa fever in the past two months within Benue State, as revealed by Dr. Sam Ngishe, the State Epidemiologist, during a telephone conversation with journalists on Thursday.
This alarming situation follows the recent report from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, which disclosed 2,621 suspected cases of Lassa fever, resulting in 84 deaths and a case fatality rate of 18.6 percent.
Dr. Ngishe shared that the impact of the disease has affected 46 individuals, including both health workers and internally displaced persons, scattered throughout the state. Notably, four cases were identified among the internally displaced persons at the Ortese IDP camp in Guma Local Government Area.
The epidemiologist emphasized that Lassa fever has spread to seven out of the 23 local government areas in the state. The affected council areas include Obi, Okpokwu, Gwer West, Makurdi, Guma, Gwer East, and Ukum.
Dr. Ngishe outlined, “Nine confirmed cases have resulted in fatalities, and in adherence to safe burial protocols, proper burials have been conducted across various areas of the state, respecting the origins of the deceased.
