NLC Pushes For ₦60,000 Minimum Wage Amidst Economic Challenges

Organized labour has turned down the Nigerian federal government’s fresh offer of a ₦60,000 minimum wage. This proposal was presented during Tuesday’s resumed negotiation meeting of the tripartite committee tasked with establishing a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

Despite this offer marking the government’s fourth proposal within two weeks of resumed discussions, labour leaders, including those from the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), found it unsatisfactory. Labour adjusted their demand slightly, lowering it from ₦497,000 to ₦494,000, while the government’s latest offer increased by ₦3,000.

A source at the meeting disclosed that labour leaders were not pleased with the government’s proposal. A labour leader, speaking before the meeting, emphasized that organized labour’s willingness to lower their demands would depend on the government’s readiness to propose a more reasonable figure.

“This is simply a case of if they go higher, we will go lower. They need to propose something reasonable for us to propose something lower too. There is no two-way about it,” the labour leader stated.
