NLC Sets Firm Deadline For States OF To Implement New Minimum WageThe Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a firm ultimatum to state governments, demanding the full implementation of the new minimum wage by December 1, 2024. In a communique released after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Sunday, the NLC condemned the worsening economic conditions in the country, attributing the escalating hardship to government policies that have driven many Nigerians into deep poverty. The union emphasized the need for urgent reforms and a review of policies it deemed “anti-people.”

The NLC also directed state councils where the new minimum wage has not yet been implemented to begin an indefinite strike from December 1, 2024, in protest against the failure to address critical labour issues. The new minimum wage, approved by President Bola Tinubu in July 2024, raised the federal minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000.

While some states have already adopted the new wage, others are still in the process, with varying timelines for full implementation. As of early November, over 20 states had committed to the N70,000 minimum wage, while several states have gone further, promising to pay even higher amounts.

To push for a nationwide resolution, the NLC has announced the formation of a National Minimum Wage Implementation Committee. The committee will lead a national campaign to assess the implementation progress, mobilize workers, and raise public awareness about the ongoing struggle for fair wages and workers’ rights.
