Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), strongly criticized the violence in the South-East associated with the group’s pursuit of secession and appealed for an out-of-court resolution to his ongoing treason trial with the Federal Government. Kanu, who has been in custody since 2021 following his re-arrest and return from Kenya to Nigeria, made these remarks during a court session at the Federal High Court in Abuja. He was captured in a viral video condemning the killings in the South-East, which he attributed to the agitation for Igbo separation from Nigeria.

During the court proceedings, Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, raised concerns about the Department of State Services’ (DSS) compliance with court orders regarding Kanu’s access and the surveillance of their meetings. He requested the court’s intervention for an out-of-court settlement under Section 17 of the Federal High Court Act, while the prosecution advised Kanu to approach the Attorney General for negotiations, emphasizing it was beyond their purview.

Justice Binta Nyako directed the DSS to provide an unrestricted meeting space within their premises for Kanu and his legal team. Meanwhile, the court dismissed Kanu’s jurisdictional challenge but allowed him to appeal, setting the next hearing for September 24. Ohanaeze Ndigbo endorsed Kanu’s call for dialogue with the government, expressing hope that such negotiations could lead to his release and ease tensions in the South-East.
