Nnamdi Kanu’s Legal Battle Takes A New Turn: New Judge And Fresh Trial Date Revealed

In September 2024, Kanu had requested that Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja recuse herself from his trial. Following this request, Justice Nyako stepped down, but her decision was later overruled by the Chief Judge of the Abuja Federal High Court.

In December, Justice Nyako adjourned Kanu’s case indefinitely.

As a result, Kanu declared that he would not appear in court again until an impartial judge was assigned to his case.

Speaking with the Daily Post, Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed that the legal team is prepared for the new trial.

Ejimakor mentioned that Kanu’s legal team has not yet been served with the charges he will face before Justice Omotosho.

He stated, “It’s official now that Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will appear before a new judge on March 21, 2025. It’s a significant moment, and we are ready.

“He will appear before Justice James Omotosho in Court 7. The case will start afresh, as if it had never been heard before. Everything done from his arrest in 2015 to his last appearance before Justice Binta Nyako, including the pending appeals, is now null and void.

“He will be rearraigned on charges we have not seen. We’ve received a hearing notice, but the specific charges haven’t been shared with us.

“We don’t yet know what charges we are facing on March 24. The government has a history of serving charges just a day before the hearing, leaving us with no time to review them.

“Sometimes they serve them in court, but the charges would already be in the court registry, and we can’t ask the court for a copy until then.”
