In a statement released on Tuesday, NNPC highlighted that the refinery’s restart marks a significant step towards Nigeria’s goal of achieving self-sufficiency in petroleum refining.
The statement, issued by Chief Corporate Communications Officer Olufemi Soneye, emphasized the refinery’s current operational status, addressing recent baseless claims that it was not producing products. “For clarity,” the statement noted, “the Old Port Harcourt Refinery is currently running at 70% of its installed capacity, with plans to increase output to 90%. The refinery is producing the following daily outputs:
•Straight-Run Gasoline (Naphtha): 1.4 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS or petrol)
•Kerosene: 900,000 litres
•Automotive Gas Oil (AGO or Diesel): 1.5 million litres
•Low Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO): 2.1 million litres
•Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG): Additional volumes
The statement further explained that the refinery uses crack C5, a blending component sourced from Indorama Petrochemicals (formerly Eleme Petrochemicals), to produce gasoline that meets national specifications. This blending process is a standard practice in global refining operations, as no single unit can produce gasoline that fully complies with all regulatory standards without such processes.
NNPC also highlighted progress on the new Port Harcourt Refinery, which is set to begin operations soon, although no formal announcements have been made yet.
The company called on Nigerians to focus on the positive strides being made under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership and to support ongoing efforts that are advancing the nation’s energy sector. The statement concluded by urging people to resist malicious attacks that undermine the country’s progress, stressing the importance of unity in building a stronger, self-sufficient energy sector.
