Nigeria missed out on the last edition in Qatar, and the players are determined not to suffer the same fate again. Their 4-1 victory over Gabon in Thursday’s playoff semi-final moved them one step closer, setting up a decisive final clash against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday in Rabat.
Speaking after the win, Osimhen told ESPN that he believes the team has all it takes to secure qualification. “We can get it done,” he said. “We have the squad to actualise this dream of going to the World Cup because everyone wants to go to the World Cup.”
Despite the upbeat atmosphere in camp, the team will be without Wilfred Ndidi for the crucial match due to suspension following accumulated yellow cards. Defender Chidozie Awaziem admitted that Ndidi’s absence will be felt.
“We’re definitely going to miss him,” Awaziem told reporters in Rabat.
However, he remained optimistic about the team’s depth. “We have other players who can play the same position and who are also very good. We trust everyone. The coach trusts everyone’s ability, and I hope whoever replaces Wilfred gives everything so the team can secure the victory,” he added.
Sunday’s final will determine who progresses to the inter-confederation playoffs set for March 2026.
