No Physical Confrontation Planned – Wike’s Team Outlines Future Actions After Fubara’s Council Chairmen InaugurationThe Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has rejected the results of the recent local government elections, labeling the process as an exercise in futility and pledging to contest the outcome in court.

In the elections held on Saturday, the Action Peoples Party (APP) claimed victory by winning 22 out of 23 chairmanship positions, while the Action Alliance candidate secured one seat. The APP also captured 314 of the 319 available councillorship seats across the state’s 23 LGAs.

Following the elections, Fubara swore in the newly elected council chairmen on Sunday. After losing control of the PDP to Wike, many of Fubara’s supporters shifted their allegiance to the APP.

Commenting on the election results, PDP Publicity Secretary Kenneth Yowika stated that the party intends to challenge the election legally. “We are pursuing this matter through the courts to ensure that justice is done and perceived to be done. Therefore, we do not recognize or accept any swearing-in taking place today (Sunday) or tomorrow (Monday),” he told The PUNCH.

Yowika emphasized that the ruling party had previously maintained that the Federal High Court had barred the conduct of the council elections, describing the state government’s actions as illegal. “Everything related to this matter is illegal. We have clearly stated that elections should not have been held, as established by the Federal High Court judgment delivered by Justice Peter Lifu,” he said.

He further noted, “Any actions taken concerning the local government elections will ultimately be futile because, as a nation that upholds the rule of law, we must not engage in activities that contravene legal stipulations. The law mandates actions that align with the Federal High Court’s judgment, which the current government has ignored.”

Yowika reiterated that the PDP is a law-abiding party and will not resort to physical confrontation. “We staged a protest yesterday (Saturday) to demonstrate that there was no election, and we maintain that stance while we await the judiciary and other governmental bodies to rectify the situation,” he stated.

He concluded, “We visited the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission yesterday, and it was clear to the world that no election took place. We stand by the ruling of the Federal High Court, which stated that the election should not proceed. They proceeded with a farce that the Peoples Democratic Party cannot accept. As we said, we are a law-abiding party and intend to remain so.
