No Retreat! NAFDAC Denies FG Order To Halt Sachet Alcohol Crackdown

The agency described the report as inaccurate and misleading, maintaining that it has not received any such directive from the Federal Government.
In a statement released on Wednesday, NAFDAC emphasized that it continues to function strictly within its legal mandate and in accordance with officially communicated government policies.
The clarification followed a media report referencing a statement allegedly issued in Abuja by the Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Terrence Kuanum. The report claimed the Federal Government had ordered a pause in enforcement actions related to the proposed restriction on sachet alcohol and small-sized alcoholic drinks.
However, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, firmly denied the claim, stating that no instruction had been received directing the agency to halt its regulatory duties.
“The publication is false and misleading and does not reflect any official communication from the Federal Government to the Agency,” she said. “At no time has NAFDAC received any formal directive to suspend its regulatory or enforcement activities concerning sachet alcohol products.”
Adeyeye reiterated the agency’s commitment to protecting public health and ensuring compliance within the food and drug sector. She noted that NAFDAC operates transparently and in line with established laws and procedures.
She further stated that any changes to national regulatory actions would be communicated through proper government channels.
The agency urged the public, industry stakeholders, and media organizations to disregard the report and rely only on verified information shared through NAFDAC’s official platforms and authorized government communication outlets.
NAFDAC also cautioned against spreading unverified claims that could trigger unnecessary public concern, economic instability, or confusion regarding government policy.
It reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding public health, supporting economic stability, and acting in the national interest.
The regulation of sachet alcohol and other small-volume alcoholic beverages has been a contentious issue in recent years, largely due to concerns about underage consumption, substance abuse, and public health risks.
While regulators continue to stress safety considerations, industry stakeholders have called for gradual implementation and broader consultations on the proposed measures.
