The move follows the 2023 general elections, where political power shifted to the southern region after eight years under former President Muhammadu Buhari, a northerner. The major candidates in that election were Bola Tinubu of the APC from the South West, Peter Obi of the Labour Party from the South East, and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, representing the North.

Recent protests in the North, under the banner of #EndBadGovernance, have heightened concerns among the region’s leaders. These demonstrations, which included the display of Russian flags and calls for the overthrow of the democratically-elected president, have sparked alarm over the region’s stability.

In response, Vice President Kashim Shettima has disclosed plans for a high-level meeting involving northern stakeholders, including governors, politicians, business leaders, and traditional rulers. The meeting aims to address the violence seen during the protests and seek solutions to the region’s issues, which Shettima attributes to leadership failures.

The summit is set to be officially announced at an upcoming event in Kaduna.

Speaking about the planned northern summit, the Protem Chairman of the LND and former governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, emphasized that the summit would serve as a platform for discussing the North’s political future, economic growth, and security challenges. He stated, “This summit will bring together key leaders, thinkers, and influencers to chart a new course for the North.”

Shekarau also expressed the group’s concerns about the region’s progress, highlighting the need to address security challenges and develop a comprehensive plan to confront the North’s issues. He stated, “This is not about any political party or individual, nor is it specifically about 2027. We aim to produce a document outlining our people’s aspirations that will guide anyone seeking our votes.”

In a communiqué co-signed by the convener, Umar Ardo, and the interim secretary, Emmanuel Jime, the LND announced its commitment to unifying the North and reasserting its influence in national politics. The group plans to engage with prominent northern stakeholders, including former heads of state, current and former vice presidents, and former Senate presidents, to garner support for this initiative.

The communiqué stated, “The LND is dedicated to fostering political unity in Northern Nigeria. Despite our diverse backgrounds and experiences, we are committed to building a strong sense of community and solidarity. This unity will be the cornerstone of our efforts to reposition the North as a leading force in Nigeria’s political landscape
