NPC Dismisses Reports Of Upcoming 2025 Census
NPC Dismisses Reports Of Upcoming 2025 CensusThe National Population Commission (NPC) has dismissed recent online claims that its chairman, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, announced 2025 as the date for Nigeria’s next population and housing census.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement issued by Erelu Taibat Yemi Oloruntoba, the acting director of public affairs, the NPC clarified that no official date has been set for the census. The commission explained that remarks made by the chairman at the 30th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development in Abuja had been misconstrued by certain individuals, leading to the false reports.
The statement clarified that while the chairman expressed hope that President Bola Tinubu would soon issue a proclamation regarding the census, he did not specify a date. The NPC emphasized that the authority to announce a census date rests entirely with the president, not the commission.
The NPC reiterated its commitment to transparency, noting that ongoing discussions are taking place with the presidency to determine a new timeline for the census. This follows the postponement of the exercise by the previous administration.
Although the United Nations recommends conducting population censuses every 10 years, Nigeria has not conducted a census since 2006, resulting in an 18-year gap in accurate demographic data. The census was originally planned for 2023 but was delayed twice under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, with the delays attributed to the transition to the newly elected government in 2023.
