In a recent development, the Kano State Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) successfully rescued 13 individuals who had fallen prey to human trafficking within the state. The state commandant, Mohammed Lawal-Falala, made this revelation during a press briefing held on Tuesday in Kano.

Lawal-Falala disclosed that the rescue operation took place on May 20, 2024, at Dan Tsinke Quarters in Tarauni Local Government Area. Acting on received intelligence, NSCDC operatives attached to Tarauni Division swiftly coordinated special surveillance to effect the rescue of the victims.

One suspect was apprehended during the operation for housing the victims, while two other prime suspects remain at large. The rescued individuals comprised five women, three female children, a boy, and four men. They were en route to Maiduguri, intending to further travel to Cameroon for labor exploitation. Among them, 10 hailed from Kano, while three were from Jigawa.

The NSCDC commandant emphasized that the rescued victims would be handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for necessary interventions.

Lawal-Falala urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, reaffirming the NSCDC’s commitment to maintaining a crime-free and secure environment in the state.

In a related development, the NSCDC Kano State Command also announced the arrest of a suspect involved in tricycle and handset theft. The arrest, which occurred on the same day in Kano Metropolis, followed numerous complaints lodged against the suspect for tricycle theft.

According to Lawal-Falala, the suspect confessed to orchestrating thefts by disguising himself as a person with a leg fracture, boarding tricycles with accomplices, and subsequently diverting the tricycle operators to facilitate theft. The suspect admitted to stealing four tricycles, which were later sold in Katsina State.

The NSCDC assured that upon the conclusion of investigations, the suspects would be prosecuted accordingly.
