President Bola Tinubu appointed Mr. Ribadu as the National Security Adviser, making him the first person without a military background to hold the position since Nigeria’s return to democratic governance in 1999. The announcement of his appointment settled the speculations that a non-military individual might be considered for the role.

As the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ribadu follows in the footsteps of retired police officers late Gambo Jimeta and Ismaila Gwarzo, who previously served as National Security Advisers.
