Nurses Welcome Abia Government’s Initiative To Raise Retirement Age

Governor Alex Otti announced during his monthly media briefing at the Government House in Umuahia that the state government plans to raise the retirement age for nurses from the current 60 to 65. This initiative is part of his administration’s broader effort to revitalize the health sector, which is a key priority for his government.

Nurses who spoke to DAILY POST over the weekend welcomed the news, noting that it will help retain experienced professionals within the Abia health system. Nkechi Uwaoma commented that the extended retirement age would ensure patients receive high-quality care from seasoned nurses, potentially saving more lives.

Scholastica Amaechi praised the decision as a positive step but urged the state government to also consider increasing nurses’ salaries and allowances.

Another nurse, who wished to remain anonymous, noted that the new policy might help reduce the trend of nurses leaving the state for better opportunities abroad. “Three of my colleagues have moved to America or Europe for better pay. I believe that raising the retirement age, along with offering competitive salaries and improving working conditions, could deter some of us from seeking opportunities elsewhere,” she said.
