The meeting, which lasted nearly seven hours at Lagos House, Marina, was attended by GAC members and 39 Assembly lawmakers. However, former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was notably absent.

According to reports from Western Post, the lawmakers unanimously rejected a proposal to zone the Speakership to the Lagos West Senatorial District, reaffirming their commitment to Meranda’s leadership. Legislators from Lagos West informed the GAC that they had no interest in the position, as they had already pledged their support for Meranda.

How Obasa Lost the Speakership

On January 13, 32 Assembly members voted to remove Obasa over allegations of high-handedness, lateness to plenary sessions, and abuse of power. Following his removal, his deputy, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, was immediately sworn in as Speaker.

Meranda Gains Strong Support

Since taking office, Meranda’s leadership has gained momentum, receiving endorsements from former lawmakers, student groups, women’s organizations, and party loyalists.

With this development, Meranda cements her place in history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
