In a robust rebuttal aired on Channels Television, Senator Kawu, who has recently been vocal about lawmakers’ earnings, contended that Obasanjo played a pivotal role in fostering corruption within the legislative branch of government.

“Obasanjo is the one who introduced corruption into the National Assembly,” Kawu declared on Thursday. He further asserted that he possesses evidence supporting his allegations.

Kawu alleged that during Obasanjo’s administration, certain National Assembly members were bribed to amend the Constitution, enabling Obasanjo to seek a third presidential term.

“I have evidence showing that his government and associates bribed some National Assembly members to change the Constitution to facilitate his bid for a third term,” Kawu said.

Obasanjo, who served as Nigeria’s president from 1999 to 2007, has recently been vocal about lawmakers’ compensation, accusing them of being disconnected from the economic struggles of ordinary Nigerians. His comments have reignited the debate over the salaries and allowances of federal lawmakers.

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has detailed the earnings of senators, which total ₦1 million. This includes: Basic Salary – ₦168,866.70; Motor Vehicle Fuelling and Maintenance Allowance – ₦126,650.00; Personal Assistant – ₦42,216.66; Domestic Staff – ₦126,650.00; Entertainment – ₦50,660.00; Utilities – ₦50,660.00; Newspapers/Periodicals – ₦25,330.00; Wardrobe – ₦42,216.66; House Maintenance – ₦8,443.33; and Constituency Allowance – ₦422,166.66.
