Obasanjo And Buhari’s Bombshell Testimonies Exposed In $2.5 Billion Mambilla Power Dispute

Former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Muhammadu Buhari recently testified before the International Chamber of Commerce Court of Arbitration in Paris, France, denying allegations that the Nigerian government awarded a $6 billion contract for the Mambilla Power Project in Taraba State to Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Limited.

The arbitration was initiated by Sunrise Power and its founder, Leno Adesanya, who are demanding $2.3 billion in compensation for an alleged breach of contract. In their testimonies, both Obasanjo and Buhari argued that any purported 2003 agreement between the Nigerian government and Sunrise Power is invalid.

They asserted that Sunrise received a letter of award from the former Minister of Power, Dr. Olu Agunloye, just a day after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) rejected the company’s proposal. The former presidents called for the court to disregard this letter, describing it as a non-legitimate government contract.

Dr. Agunloye, who served during Obasanjo’s administration, is currently facing trial in Abuja for charges related to the Mambilla project, including forgery and corruption. He has denied the accusations, claiming the government is using him as a scapegoat to undermine Sunrise Power’s case.

Supporting the former presidents’ claims were several key figures, including the current Justice Minister and Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), former Justice Minister Mallam Abubakar Malami (SAN), former Power Minister Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), and former Water Resources Minister Engr. Suleiman Adamu.

While Sunrise Power and Leno Adesanya have yet to present witnesses, reports suggest that Obasanjo and Buhari performed admirably in defending Nigeria’s position. A source close to the proceedings highlighted their decisive testimony, which was instrumental in exposing Sunrise’s claim as an attempt to secure a fraudulent settlement.
