Obasanjo Shares His Agricultural Enthusiasm
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo proclaimed himself as an ardent advocate for agriculture during his address at the 9th International Trade Exhibition and Conference on Agrofood, Plastics, Printing, and Packaging in Lagos. Emphasizing the paramount importance of promoting agribusiness for various socio-economic benefits, Obasanjo highlighted its crucial role in ensuring food security, nutrition, employment, wealth creation, poverty alleviation, and foreign exchange generation.
He recounted an exchange with a friend who deemed his agricultural pursuits as madness, to which Obasanjo embraced the label, declaring himself “a mad man for agriculture.” He reiterated his unwavering commitment to the agricultural sector, affirming his readiness to engage whenever called upon regarding agricultural matters.
Obasanjo underscored the three pillars of food security: availability, affordability, and accessibility. He stressed the need for sufficient food production to meet demand, ensuring that everyone can access the food they require. Additionally, he lamented the significant post-harvest losses, estimating that nearly 40% of cultivated food goes to waste, thereby emphasizing the critical importance of agribusiness in achieving both food and nutrition security.
