In an interview with Channels Television from his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo expressed deep admiration for Carter, whom he credited as one of the key reasons he is alive today.

Reflecting on their friendship and shared experiences, Obasanjo described Carter as a loyal ally to Nigeria and Africa and a global champion for justice and fairness.

Obasanjo, who served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1976 to 1979 and as a democratically elected President from 1999 to 2007, emphasized Carter’s pivotal role in strengthening Nigeria-U.S. relations during his presidency.

Carter, who served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, visited Nigeria in 1978, forming a lasting bond with Obasanjo that spanned decades.

After his presidency, Carter devoted his life to promoting democracy, addressing neglected health issues, and teaching Sunday school. Born in Plains, Georgia, he lived a humble life, spending his final days in the same modest home he and his wife bought in 1961.

Obasanjo mourned Carter’s death as a significant loss, not only for Nigeria and Africa but for the entire world, which has lost a tireless advocate for human rights and equality.
