Obasanjo’s Service To Nigeria Is Second To None – Peter Obi Lauds Statesmanship

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has celebrated former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 88th birthday, praising his outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s development.

Obi highlighted that during Obasanjo’s tenure, Nigeria’s economy expanded significantly, growing from $59 billion to $278 billion.

In his birthday tribute on Wednesday, the former Anambra State governor commended Obasanjo’s unwavering dedication to the nation’s unity and progress, describing him as a revered statesman and father figure.

Obi expressed his prayers for Obasanjo’s continued good health and happiness, acknowledging his patriotism and sacrifices for a better Nigeria and Africa.

He emphasized that when Obasanjo assumed office in 1999, Nigeria’s GDP stood at approximately $59 billion with a per capita income of $490, while the foreign debt was around $32 billion. By the time he left office in 2007, GDP had surged to $278 billion, GDP per capita had risen to $1,800, and foreign debt had been drastically reduced to $3.2 billion, alongside a notable boost in foreign reserves.

Obi lauded Obasanjo’s exceptional commitment to Nigeria’s unity and prayed for more fruitful years ahead for the former president.
