Obaseki Initiates Talks To Mend Fences Between Palace, Enigie In Benin Kingdom

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has embarked on a peace-building mission to address the discord between His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, and certain suspended Enigie.

Following a meeting with some Enigie in Edo South Senatorial District at the residence of Prof. Gregory Akenzua in Benin City, Governor Obaseki expressed his commitment to understanding the underlying issues and fostering reconciliation among the concerned parties.

The primary goal of these discussions is to facilitate the withdrawal of ongoing court proceedings, ultimately fostering peace in Edo South. Governor Obaseki condemned attempts by certain politicians to exploit and distort the situation, emphasizing the significance of preserving the unique heritage of the Benin Royalty for future generations.

He stated, “Every Enogie in Edo South has a blood relationship with the Palace; they are an extension of the Benin Royal family. We are here to meet a cross-section of them to understand what the issues are. We want to know what it takes to broker peace and reconcile them with the hope that the case is withdrawn from the Court.”

Governor Obaseki stressed the importance of resolving the matter without political interference, urging all parties involved to prioritize the preservation of the royal family and the Palace.

The Enogie of Evbo-Obanosa, Prof. Gregory Akenzua, lauded Governor Obaseki for his efforts to intervene and promote peace. He clarified that the decision to pursue legal action was not influenced by the governor, asserting that there are substantive issues that must be addressed for a meaningful resolution to be reached.
