This significant event, crucial for the party’s future direction, saw prominent figures in attendance, including Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, his running mate Datti Baba-Ahmed, and Governor Alex Oti of Abia State. Several senators and members of the House of Representatives who are affiliated with the party also joined the meeting. Additionally, governorship candidates from Edo and Imo States, Olumide Akpata and Athan Achonu, were present.
In her opening address, Senator Usman emphasized the importance of unity within the party, urging members of the former National Working Committee (NWC), led by Julius Abure, to put aside their differences. She called for collective efforts in rebuilding the Labour Party, stressing cooperation among all factions for the party’s growth and success.
“I urge all members, particularly those from the former NWC, to sheathe their swords and join us in rebuilding the party,” Senator Usman appealed.
The Caretaker Committee Chairman also stated that the LP would review the governorship primaries for Anambra State and make its position known. The primaries, held in Awka on Saturday, saw George Moughalu, the former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, emerge as the Labour Party’s candidate for the November 8, 2025, governorship election.
