Obi Raises Alarm: Growing Hardship Forces Nigerian Homes To Devote Entire Incomes Solely To Food Expenses

In a recent statement on his official X account, Obi expressed deep concern about the escalating issue of food insecurity in Nigeria, emphasizing that a growing number of Nigerians are now allocating their entire income solely to food expenses. The former Anambra Governor referred to alarming predictions from the hunger index and stressed the increasingly intricate nature of the situation.

Calling upon the Nigerian government, Obi urged immediate action to secure farmers across the nation and provide them with substantial support to enhance food production.

Obi’s statement highlighted his distress, recalling a UNICEF publication, the Cadre Harmonisé, from January 2023, which indicated that approximately 25 million Nigerians faced the risk of hunger between June and August 2023 if urgent interventions were not implemented. By the close of 2023, the reported figure rose to 26.5 million, a situation that continued to deeply concern Nigerians.

The former governor revealed the latest warning from the Cadre Harmonisé, projecting that an even more substantial number, around 31.5 million Nigerians, are now at risk of acute hunger and severe food insecurity between June and August 2024.

Obi lamented the increasing complexity of the situation, attributing it to the high cost of living and elevated inflation rates prevailing in the economy. Nigeria, with its Global Hunger Index ranking at 109 out of 125 countries, is now categorized among the 20 hungriest nations globally.

He emphasized his long-standing belief that transitioning from consumption to production, particularly through aggressive investments in agriculture, is the most effective strategy to combat hunger in Nigeria. Obi stressed the need to harness the vast arable lands, primarily in the Northern parts of the country.

Given the impending danger highlighted by the Cadre Harmonisé, Obi urged swift and decisive measures to avert the crisis. He underscored the urgency of boosting food production in the country as a crucial step to counteract the rising levels of hunger and the resulting discontent within the nation.
