Speaking in Enugu over the weekend during a South-East regional meeting of the Obidient Movement—a political advocacy group championing Mr. Peter Obi’s presidential ambition—Tanko stressed that the credibility of Nigeria’s democracy has been seriously undermined by the conduct of the 2023 general elections.

The gathering, which included the election of a South-East coordinator for the movement, was attended by enthusiastic supporters of Obi and the Labour Party.

Addressing the members, Tanko noted, “The 2023 election was riddled with widespread allegations of irregularities, and this has caused many Nigerians to question the legitimacy of the electoral outcomes. For democracy to thrive, the judiciary, INEC, and security agencies must undergo urgent reform.”

He further asserted that the vision of a ‘New Nigeria’ championed by the Obidient Movement can only be realized if democratic institutions are allowed to function independently, and citizens, along with the media, are free to voice their opinions without fear or censorship.

Tanko also decried the corrosive impact of corruption, saying it continues to erode public trust in governance and weakens the democratic framework of the country.

During the event, Mr. Ikenna Azomchine—an ardent Obi supporter who identifies as the “Obidient General for the New Nigeria of Our Dreams”—was elected to lead the movement in the South-East. He described the Obidient Movement as a unifying platform to rally citizens in pursuit of a reformed and accountable political system.
