Ogun Announces Health Insurance Scheme Aimed At Formal Sector

Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by his deputy, Engineer Noimot Salako-Oyedele, announced that the government will cover 50 percent of the insurance premium for each worker enrolled in the scheme.

Abiodun emphasized the administration’s commitment to the well-being of public servants, who are considered the backbone of the government. He highlighted the alignment of the 2024 Civil Service Week theme, “Building a Socially Responsive Public Service in the 21st Century: A Place of Ethics and Values,” with the administration’s vision for public service.

The governor assured public servants that their welfare remains a priority, citing various initiatives including a N100 million counterpart fund for accessing the Federal Government’s Basic Health Care Provision Fund, the launch of the informal sector of OGSHIS in 2020, and a N100 million grant for the Ogun State Health Insurance Agency. Additionally, he mentioned the release of N310 million earlier this year to provide health insurance for low-income residents and N324 million to support 3,300 pregnant women with free antenatal and postnatal care, including a N5,000 delivery token.

Abiodun underscored that the scheme’s success depends on effective collaboration with health officials and stakeholders to ensure its proper implementation and continuous improvement.

Dr. Tomi Coker, Commissioner for Health, pointed out that a significant portion of Nigerians currently pay for healthcare out-of-pocket, making them vulnerable to financial hardships from unexpected health expenses. She encouraged residents to utilize both the informal and formal sector schemes for protection against such risks.

Head of Service Mr. Kehinde Onasanya praised the new scheme for improving healthcare access and positively impacting the workforce’s well-being. He urged workers to appreciate and support the government’s initiative.

The state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Hameed Ademola, commended the governor for his worker-friendly approach and the government’s commitment to covering half of the premium costs. He also requested that the scheme be consistently maintained and expressed the union’s support for its success.
