 Ogun Government Launches Vaccination Campaign With 5,000 Health Workers Targeting MeaslesThe Ogun State government has announced the deployment of over 5,000 health personnel across the state for its 2024 measles vaccination campaign. This initiative aims to immunize one million children aged between nine months and five years across all 20 local government areas.

At a press conference in Abeokuta on Thursday, Commissioner for Health Tomi Coker outlined the details of the 2024 Integrated Measles Campaign. The seven-day vaccination exercise is scheduled to run from Saturday, October 19, to Friday, October 25.

Coker highlighted the importance of measles vaccinations, noting that unvaccinated children are at risk of severe complications, including blindness, brain damage, and high fever leading to seizures. She emphasized the state’s commitment to reducing measles cases globally, referencing the significant decline in confirmed cases from 118 in October 2022 to just 15 in the same period this year.

“The campaign conducted two years ago resulted in a marked reduction in measles cases, with confirmed cases dropping from 118 in October 2022 to 15 in October 2024. Additionally, we have seen a decline in yellow fever cases, from three in October 2022 to zero this year,” Coker stated.

This year’s campaign aims to target approximately 1,136,953 children aged nine months to 59 months across all local government areas. The official launch will take place on Friday at Saint Peter’s Anglican Primary School in Siun, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, at 11:00 AM.

Coker reassured the public that the immunization is free and urged parents and caregivers to take advantage of the initiative by bringing their children to designated vaccination centers throughout the state’s 236 wards.

The campaign will utilize various platforms, including government health facilities (primary, secondary, and tertiary), churches, mosques, markets, schools, parks, and other temporary fixed posts. She encouraged parents to ensure their children are vaccinated against this preventable but serious disease, stating, “The measles vaccine is safe, effective, and free of charge.
