Ogun State Partners With Airport Communities In New Development Agreement

The Commissioner for Transportation, Gbenga Dairo, led the government delegation during the signing ceremony held at the airport. In a statement on Thursday, he emphasized the importance of the meeting, which aimed to ensure peaceful coexistence among the communities affected by the airport project.

Dairo addressed several key issues, including compensation for families whose lands were acquired, as well as local employment opportunities and boundary delineations for the two major towns hosting the airport. He reassured stakeholders that their grievances would be taken seriously.

He praised the communities of Iperu and Ilisan for their cooperation and noted the airport’s potential benefits, which would extend beyond the current generation. Dairo highlighted that the airport, featuring one of Nigeria’s longest runways at 11.8 kilometers, had secured its place on the global map and was equipped with comprehensive security measures.

Consultant to the Governor on Aviation, Benedict Adeyileka, added that the airport’s construction utilized world-class facilities, promising to drive growth and employment opportunities for surrounding towns and the wider Ogun State.

The Oluwo of Iperu, Opeodun Ifashola, expressed gratitude to Governor Dapo Abiodun for reviving the long-abandoned project and assured that the community would foster positive relationships with all stakeholders. Wemmy Osunde, Chairman of the Ilisan Development Association, also expressed satisfaction with the project but urged that concerns regarding compensation and boundaries be addressed to ensure fairness for all.

The state Surveyor General, Oladele Ewulo, affirmed that proper procedures were followed in land acquisition and compensation, pledging to review any documentation for potential corrections.

Before the agreement was signed, the government delegation visited the palaces of the Alaperu of Iperu Remo, Oba Adeleke Basibo, and the Olofin of Ilisan Remo, Oba Michael Sonuga, where both monarchs endorsed the memorandum on behalf of their communities.
