Ogun State Promises Legal Consequences For Woman Who Burned Child’s Private Parts

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Adijat Adeleye, has pledged that Temitope Adetanju, aged 25, will face full prosecution for allegedly burning the private parts of a 12-year-old girl with firewood. This incident occurred in Obada, Abeokuta, after the girl reportedly stole a biscuit and a sachet of Milo worth N150.

Adeleye expressed her commitment to ensuring justice in response to a viral video showing the girl describing her injuries. The victim, originally from Ijoun in Yewa North Local Government Area, revealed that she had been living with Adetanju, a friend of her father’s younger sister. Adetanju purportedly punished her by burning her private parts with firewood.

Despite being informed of the case while on Hajj, Adeleye assured that actions were being taken. The perpetrator has been apprehended, and the girl is receiving medical treatment at a health center in Obada, where the incident was reported to the Obada police station.

Adeleye condemned the act as barbaric and assured the public of the state government’s commitment to the welfare of all children, as outlined in the Child Rights Law. She confirmed that the accused would be arraigned promptly, emphasizing that justice would be served.

Omolola Odutola, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the incident and stated that Temitope Adetanju had been arrested on June 13, 2024, for inserting a sizable firewood into the girl’s private part as punishment for her alleged theft.
