In a statement released on Sunday by Okechukwu Iseguzoro, the factional Secretary-General, Ohanaeze praised the economic policies outlined in the broadcast as potentially effective for long-term economic improvement. However, the organization voiced worry over the anticipated protests from August 5th to 10th, 2024, and the growing national tension.

The statement highlighted, “The upcoming protests are worrying, as demonstrators are calling for urgent government action. President Tinubu’s address might have been more impactful if it had included a reversal of fuel prices or addressed the key demands of the protesters.”

Ohanaeze also cautioned about the risk of local and international actors potentially escalating the protests into violence. Although the Southeast is not currently a focus of the unrest, the organization noted that other regions, such as the North, Southwest, and Niger Delta, could be more susceptible to instability.

The organization urged President Tinubu to act swiftly, possibly by reversing the fuel price increase or offering other gestures of goodwill, to address the protesters’ demands and prevent further unrest. They emphasized the need for immediate action to stabilize the situation and allow for the effective implementation of the economic policies outlined in his speech.
