Oil Theft Endangers Nigeria’s Sovereignty – Senate Raises Alarm

This call was made by Senator Ned Nwoko, Chairman of the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Oil Theft, during a working visit to Rivers State alongside other committee members.

Nwoko explained that the visit was part of the committee’s oversight mission targeting oil theft, illegal bunkering, and broader efforts to secure Nigeria’s revenue streams.

As part of the visit, the committee met with the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (Rtd), and the General Officer Commanding the 6th Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Emmanuel Ejim-Emekah.

In a statement issued Saturday, Senator Nwoko praised both Ibas and the Nigerian Army for their dedication to defending the country’s vital oil infrastructure.

He affirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to providing every necessary legislative backing to protect Nigeria’s primary source of income.

“As legislators, we are deeply concerned about the security and economic consequences of oil theft. Nigeria loses billions of dollars annually due to these criminal activities—money that could be channeled into critical areas like education, healthcare, infrastructure, and youth empowerment,” Nwoko said.

He continued: “That’s why the Senate Ad-hoc Committee is adopting a holistic strategy—combining field assessments with policy evaluation, stakeholder engagement with legislative reform, and security operations with economic development plans.

“Oil theft is more than an economic offence; it’s a direct assault on our national sovereignty, a threat to community stability, and a barrier to long-term growth. Combating it demands a united and strategic response—from our institutions, security agencies, communities, and political leaders.”

He stressed that the path forward would require determination, a shared vision, and collective action.

“The Senate will remain steadfast in its oversight role—ensuring accountability and supporting those responsible for managing our national assets. Together, we must protect our country’s wealth, security, and future,” Nwoko concluded.
